AmazonB&NBOOK SYNOPSIS
The number-one New York Times-bestselling author J. D. Robb presents an intense and terrifying new case for New York homicide cop Eve Dallas, one that will take her all the way to the city that gave her her name-and plunge her into the nightmares of her childhood.
When a monster named Isaac McQueen-taken down by Eve back in her uniform days-escapes from Rikers, he has two things in mind. One is to pick up where he left off, abducting young victims and leaving them scarred in both mind and body. The other is to get revenge on the woman who stopped him all those years ago.
My Thoughts
When Eve was a rookie cop twelve years prior she had taken Isaac McQueen down, saving 22 young women who he had raped and brutalized from him and earning his enmity. Now as the Lieutenant in charge of New York’s Homicide Division Eve finds herself racing against time to find the escaped McQueen before his latest victim becomes another notch on his belt.
The usual aspects of New York setting do not apply with this one, there is some action in New York as it starts out there but then the venue changes to Dallas Texas. Going back to the city that holds such black memories for Eve is a challenge she finds herself facing with extreme unease, especially since Isaac McQueen targets young girls which brings a whole new level of emotional pitfalls for Eve to overcome.
We still have the ongoing awe of watching how this woman’s mind works as she carries out her job, also the joy of just how much she and Roarke are still evolving as a married couple and when push comes to shove the knowledge that no matter how rough it gets or how canny her opponent is Eve Dallas is up to the task of capturing the criminal!
McQueen’s cat and mouse game to exact revenge grows deadlier this time and even though we expect the final confrontation the actual scene is wrenching regardless.
I have been away from the
series for a while but like a well worn pair of shoes it was comfortable to slip back into and also comforting to still find myself thrilled by the unraveling of both the mystery and more of Eve’s past.
