BOOK SYNOPSIS

The hunt for a killer leads to a battle between justice and desire…

For U.S. marshal Rourke Kincaid, there's the law…and then there's his law. When the two don't agree, he always trusts his instincts. A killing spree has gripped the Northwest, showing a strange connection that only he sees, and now the old rules of justice no longer apply. Forced to turn rogue, he goes deep undercover to track his mysterious female suspect to a quiet, unassuming café in the wild, isolated mountains of Beartooth, Montana.

But encountering Callie Westfield complicates his mission in ways he never expected. As suspicious as she seems, her fragile beauty and sexy charm get to Rourke. Then the gory crimes begin anew. With his heart suddenly at war with his instincts, he has only two options. Either turn Callie over to the law, or put everything—including his badge and his life—on the line to protect her.

My Thoughts

This is the 5th book in the series, of which have only read 3, and once again Beartooth Montana is the main focal point as far as location settings in the book, there are a few other places as well that our characters end up spending time during the investigative process but Beartooth and it's inhabitants are at the heart of the story.

Can truly say the only thing that disappointed me was that it took over 50% of the book before I figured out who the female suspect had to be and even then only got it half right until it all gelled.

It goes without saying that even though the descriptions of the locale sounds breathtakingly beautiful, especially the Mountain area and the lake outside Beartooth, my home will always be Texas no matter how much would love to visit Montana to see some of the vistas there for myself. I love how the author manages to make one feel as though what her characters are viewing is right outside the readers window waiting for them to look and see it as well.

Rourke Kincaid is a former Wyoming cowboy who has risen in the ranks of law enforcement to become a U.S. Marshall, having been put on restricted duty due to his conflict over adhering to the rules he was assigned to working on cold case files. Now being given two weeks leave to sort out his ability to follow the rules and orders that he has once again ignored Rourke enlists the help of his former partner in the Seattle Police Department to follow up on three of the murder cases on his own time.

Injured and now retired from Seattle PD, Laura Fuller is almost relieved when her former partner contacts her for help, she is now working on contract basis but believes that with a little more experience she can land a full time job profiling for cases like the one Rourke is working on. Also she finds herself hoping that after a year maybe her relationship with Rourke could become more than just friends.

The complications from finding himself wanting to get to know Callie Westfield do not interfere with his investigation into the murders, however the more he digs the more Rourke grows to believe that Callie is involved but not the murderer.

After all the twists and turns that this story takes the final twist when the murderer is revealed is one that will either take you totally unaware or not but it will totally make you think twice about how well you know someone even if you spend hours in the day with them.

This story is a testimony to believing in following one's gut instinct, it also proves just how much we have to learn about what past upbringing and environment combine to create a psychopath with the ability to appear normal.
