Housewife Blues and Chihuahua Stories

Lifelong Texan, love reading from many genres thanks to early childhood readalongs with my Dad, love cooking for my family, working in my yard, playing with my cats and since being diagnosed in late 2012 with RRMS finding ways to keep body and mind active is even more important.

Dark Kiss (Nightwatchers Series #1)

Dark Kiss - Michelle Rowen BOOK SYNOPSISI don't do dangerous.Smart, über-careful, ordinary Samantha—that's me. But I just couldn't pass up a surprise kiss from my number one unattainable crush. A kiss that did something to me, something strange. Now I feel hungry all the time, but not for food. It's like part of me is missing—and I don't know if I can get it back. Then there's Bishop. At first I thought he was just a street kid, but the secrets he's keeping are as intense as his unearthly blue eyes. If he's what I think he is, he may be the only one who can help me. But something terrifying is closing in, and the one chance Bishop and I have to stop it means losing everything I ever wanted and embracing the darkness inside me.MY THOUGHTSAs this is my first book read written by author Michelle Rowen have no reference on how it stacks up to other works that she has released in her 4 other series. However, after having read several authors in the past few years whose work include both Adult and YA series I do know what I like and what leaves me feeling a bit like something is "missing" in a book. The characters are all pretty well defined in their roles in the story, the story itself has an interestingly created and executed plot for the most part and then the "but" comes into play. I found myself wishing there was less "talking" between the characters and more "action", at times some of the "actions" taken by Samantha, Bishop and Kraven seemed not only a little "over the top" but not necessary either. The entire time I read this book it never felt like the characters were ones that kept me engaged, no matter what happened to them there was no real empathy on my part whether they accomplished their task or not. This hardly ever happens when I read, when watching certain movies yes but rarely do I meet a group of characters whose actions do not mean something to me in a book. I have to blame myself completely for this, the author created characters who were very well developed, created scenarios where it mattered greatly that they each succeed, created a plot that was really solid and yet for some reason even though I enjoyed the story as a whole it never really "grabbed me" and kept my attention the way it should have. Blame it on the summer heat, blame it on too much over saturation of back to back paranormal reads but will not be following up with this series and that is very unusual for me to say as I normally love to keep following characters from book to book once I get to know them.If you are a young adult reader who enjoys the mythology of angels and demons then this one is for you, especially since it has a few unique twists that will manage to actually surprise you when they surface in the story.[Netgalley EArc for honest review.]
