Housewife Blues and Chihuahua Stories

Lifelong Texan, love reading from many genres thanks to early childhood readalongs with my Dad, love cooking for my family, working in my yard, playing with my cats and since being diagnosed in late 2012 with RRMS finding ways to keep body and mind active is even more important.

Life Before Legend: Stories of the Criminal and the Prodigy

Life Before Legend: Stories of the Criminal and the Prodigy - Marie Lu This accomplished what it intended which was to allow a deeper glimpse into how both Day and June became who their characters showed promise of as young pre-teens. As other have pointed out one thing that stands out is of course the differences in their upbringings is so pronounce that it is really hard to not set Day up as the one who had it the hardest. Maybe in many respects but being bullied, belittled and left orphaned for June was as traumatic as the hand-to-mouth existence that Day had to deal with for many years.

I could have skipped reading this easily as can anyone else who has already read the trilogies full length books, for those who have not it will help put the characters in perspective a bit better before reading book 1, Legend which finally read back in August of 2014 and got me hooked.

First Kiss: A Spring Romance

First Kiss: A Spring Romance - Jenny Schwartz This is one of those quick "aww" reads that put a smile on your face and joy in your heart when finished reading!

Pink faerie horses, chuckle worthy but splendid visual.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

It's been three months since everyone under the age of fifteen became trapped in the bubble known as the FAYZ.
Three months since all the adults disappeared.

Gone.

Food ran out weeks ago. Everyone is starving, but no one wants to figure out a solution. And each day, more and more kids are evolving, developing supernatural abilities that set them apart from the kids without powers.

Tension rises and chaos is descending upon the town. It's the normal kids against the mutants. Each kid is out for himself, and even the good ones turn murderous.

But a larger problem looms. The Darkness, a sinister creature that has lived buried deep in the hills, begins calling to some of the teens in the FAYZ. Calling to them, guiding them, manipulating them.

The Darkness has awakened. And it is hungry.

My Thoughts

Happiness is a full belly, now a distant memory for those trapped in the FAYZ. The inhabitants of Perdido Beach are becoming unruly, friends are now at odds as are brothers and sisters and all out anarchy is not far behind.

To make things worse the creature in the abandoned mine has it’s hooks deep in Caine, Drake and now it is beginning to set it’s sights on Lana as well.

Poor Sam just wants to do the right thing, at only 15 he feels so overwhelmed at all the day to day problems of trying to mitigate the crisis situations for over 300 children that he finally finds himself at a breaking point. Good thing is that only Astrid witnesses his major meltdown because there is an even bigger concern at hand and that is Caine and his followers have taken control of the nuclear plant outside town that provides the electricity to keep Period Beach in power for lights, hot water heaters and other appliances.

If that is not enough to worry about there is a group of humans lobbying for control of things, their main theme is that the humans are being treated unfairly and since Sam is one of the main ”Freaks” as well as being currently in charge of the towns workings they feel he should be overthrown.

Food shortages however remain the major issue and as the unthinkable comes closer to becoming reality these kids stranded together in the FAYZ have some hard choices to make, question is when everything comes to a head what will they do to survive and better question is what won't they do.

Book 2 ratchets up what was already an intense story and leads directly into setting up book 3 Lies which I hope to read soon.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Embrace the Forbidden

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?

This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.
Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She's aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but it isn't until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He's the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

My Thoughts

One thing is for sure this one totally changed how I feel about the Nephilium as the focus characters for a story, normally they are not too interesting to me but with this one the more I learned the more wanted to know about not only Anna but the rest of the cast that we are introduced to as well.

The push/pull romance between Anna and bad ass drummer Kaidan was not one that thought would work but after they started their infamous road trip and found out more about each other as well as allowed their natural attraction to each other to blossom it started to become more appealing of a pairing.

The best part is that book 2 Sweet Peril & Sweet Reckoning book #3 are already available to borrow so am really looking forward to reading more of this trilogy soon.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

When Rafael Villar, Lord Vampire of London, stumbles upon a woman in the cemetery, he believes he’s found a vampire hunter—not the beautiful, intelligent stranger she proves to be.

Cassandra Burton is enthralled by the scarred, disfigured vampire who took her prisoner. The aspiring physician was robbing graves to pursue her studies—and he might turn out to be her greatest subject yet. So they form a bargain: one kiss for every experiment. As their passion grows and Rafe begins to heal, only one question remains: can Cassandra see the man beyond the monster?

My Thoughts

After missing out on book 2 One Bite Per Night there were flashbacks hinting at bits and pieces of Lydia and Vicente's story so really did not feel lacking for not reading it. In this third book we find ourselves rooting for Rafe Villar who has been cast in the past as a rather forbidding, darkly brooding male who seldom seems to find pleasure in any one or any thing around him.

It was gratifying to not only watch Cassandra shake his conviction that his disfiguring scars were in any way repulsive to her but it was also grand to see her find a champion in Rafe, someone who did not think her being female should ever stand in the way of her dream of practicing medicine.

This was different in tone than the initial book in the Scandals with Bite series, in some ways it was richer and in some ways it was darker but in every way it was enjoyable reading.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Sage Czinski is trying really hard to be perfect. If she manages it, people won't peer beyond the surface, or ask hard questions about her past. She's learned to substitute causes for relationships, and it's working just fine. . . until Shane Cavendish strolls into her math class. He's a little antisocial, a lot beautiful, and everything she never knew she always wanted.

Shane Cavendish just wants to be left alone to play guitar and work on his music. He's got heartbreak and loneliness in his rearview mirror, and this new school represents his last chance. He doesn't expect to be happy; he only wants to graduate and move on. He never counted on a girl like Sage.

But love doesn't mend all broken things, and sometimes life has to fall apart before it can be put back together again. . . .

My Thoughts

Others have talked about how sweet they have found this story to be, it is but it is also so much more and done in such a way you cannot help but devour pages to learn more. At a focal point where getting close to secrets from Sage's past start coming to light, my anxiety for her was off the charts and my curiosity was killing me too.

I thought that Sage and Shane’s traumatic pasts were handled well, the information was not overwhelming nor were their respective mistakes dragged on and on as part of the story line but rather disclosed and than we moved on.

The awful angst that both characters felt about sharing their pasts with each other was clearly dealt with as well, the fact that they could find it in their hearts to open up to each other and start finally healing was a wonderful aspect of this story that is actually something I expect in YA but sometimes do not find fully realized for the main characters.

The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things is a unique addition to YA, it combines many traits that make it a part of the genre but it also incorporates unusual aspects that make it stand out from the pack for me.

One such aspect is the lack of a love triangle and even better the lack of an abrupt cliffhanger ending, both these things help to make this a much more pleasurable read than expected.

Be still my heart what a beautiful ending for two endearing young people. I am sorry to be finished but grateful to have enjoyed this one from start to finish!

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Two of the wildest hearts in Scotland fight for their destiny in this searing-hot romance, sure to be devoured by fans of Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters Unbound series and Shelly Laurenston’s Pride Stories.

As a bear-shifter in a pack roaming the Scottish countryside, Bryce Matheson embodies brute force and untamed abandon. As a widower, he’s running scared. When Bryce attempted to open his scarred heart to another, she grew tired of waiting for him to state his intentions, and the unearthly beauty spurned him for someone who wasn’t worthy. But now that fate has conspired to set Kenzie Denune free once again, Bryce vows to finally win her love.

Kenzie is a witch who summons her powers to protect those too weak to care for themselves. After surviving an abusive husband, she swears off men—even men like Bryce, whose iron muscles make her knees weak, and whose piercing eyes fill her with longing. Her life’s purpose is to help others. However, dark forces have different plans for her gifts. To save herself, Kenzie must team up with the shifter who has always stirred her soul—and trust in a passion powerful enough to set her blood aflame.

My Thoughts

This is about second chances, second chance for happiness, also for love and family that has been longed for by both Bryce and Kenzie for many years.

As children the pair were inseparable, until Bryce met the first love of his life Miranda and at that point the friendship that may have blossomed into more with Kenzie was forgotten,

After Bryce lost his wife when she birthed their daughter he found himself grief stricken, so deeply mourning Miranda that he closed himself off from everyone but his baby girl for a very long time.

Kenzie had loved Bryce since childhood, when he finally found his way to approaching her as more than a friend she was over the moon until the day he broke her heart when he told her he felt like it was wrong for them to be happy together as it betrayed his deceased wife.

She moved on and married another man, a man who swore he would love her as well as take care of her. Her husband Duncan broke every promise he made on their wedding day, his abuse led her to the conclusion that no man was trustworthy.

Now widowed years later Kenzie is once again finding herself being sought after by Bryce, the only problem is she had her heart trampled upon twice and has no intention of letting it happen again.

As Bryce and Kenzie slowly work through the heartache from the past their previous turbulent chemistry once again takes them to heights of ecstasy, a brilliant promise for a glorious future together raising young Colleen and if lucky having children together as well.

The future together however becomes uncertain when a threat to Kenzie comes calling, a threat that will take her life if not stopped.

This story was filled with a lot of laughs provided by both Kenzie’s employer/mentor Effie Monroe and young Colleen Matheson who is Bryce’s daughter. Their is also suspense, tension, sensual heat, and a lot of drama both before and after the relationship between Bryce and Kenzie becomes fully realized.

At the end there is a much awaited and much anticipated joyful conclusion to a turbulent paranormal romance.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Shapeshifting skinwalker Jane Yellowrock is the best in the business when it comes to slaying vampires. But her latest fanged foe may be above her pay grade…

For centuries, the extremely powerful and ruthless vampire witches of the European Council have wandered the Earth, controlling governments, fostering war, creating political conflict, and often leaving absolute destruction in their wake. One of the strongest of them is set to create some havoc in the city of New Orleans, and it’s definitely personal.

Jane is tasked with tracking him down. With the help of a tech wiz and an ex-Army ranger, her partners in Yellowrock Securities, she’ll have to put everything on the line, and hope it’s enough. Things are about to get real hard in the Big Easy.

My Thoughts

Hey it is Jane Yellowrock people and no way can wait to get my long ago pre-ordered book if given the chance to read early! Gladly have made the sacrifice as this was a thrill ride all the way.

Jane has finally come to understand that there are more than black and white shades to right and wrong, gray is also in there as a fine line to walk between being on the side of good versus on the side of evil.

In this 9th book Jane walks that line tighter than she ever has, she also has to make some hard choices that lead to some even harsher consequences a time or two.

As a loyal fan of Ms. Yellowrock since the very beginning this was one of the more intense reads for me, Jane has faced challenges that tested her limits in the past but none come close to ending her the way this one seemed to several times.

As others have stated seeing the characters change and grow is the best part of following along with them for 9 books, Jane has come so far since her introduction and to be honest this time her growth was kind of scary.

What enjoy best is knowing ahead of time that no matter how bad it gets, no matter how big or how bad the ugly is that Jane pits herself against it will end with her winning with or without help from allies and friends.

Admit it was touch and go a time or two but satisfyingly Jane Yellowrock and Beast once again prevail, keeping Jane’s humanity as intact as possible while still allowing Beast to share her power as needed.

There is a ceremony that Alex, Eli and Jane talk about that will choke you up like it did me when read it. Seems like the boys and Jane have finally acknowledged they are more than partners and it was very touching as well as portents of things to come.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Sloane Redding is the shy one, the timid one. The morning of her wedding, she's dumped by the man she'd thought she'd spend the rest of her life with. Humiliated, she turns tail and runs, leaving Nowhere, Alabama for a job in the city. Sloane sets out to remake herself. She succeeds...on the outside. On the inside? Different story. She’s still the shy Redding. Still quiet, still more interested in standing on the side lines. But all of that is about to change.

The night before her brother's wedding, she strolls in the lone bar in Nowhere wearing wicked red and she's got one goal in mind: to show her ex-fiance just what he lost.

The night before his best friend's wedding, D.B. "Boone" Cassidy walks into the lone bar in Nowhere, Alabama with one goal in mind. Get wasted. Former military, he's spent the past few years as a security specialist and all around troubleshooter. It should have been easy to spot the trouble that night...a sexy woman in wicked red. It should have been easy. Yeah, right.

One thing leads to another and his plans to get wasted turn into a night with the sexy woman in red . Boone gets the shock of his life the next day when he shows up at his friend's wedding to find out he'd just spent the night wrapped around his best friend's little sister...and that isn't the only surprise.

Includes a bonus story, Tempt Me.

My Thoughts

Sloane Redding is in her early 20’s, she has always done the right thing, been the good girl and played it safe. Doing so has meant that she was jilted on her wedding day, told by said ex that she just did not have enough going for her to keep him interested. So what does a girl do when thrown over for someone else, she decides to show her two timing ex exactly what he let go and what he can no longer have.

Sloane has one goal when she returns for her brothers wedding in their hometown of Nowhere, Alabama and that is to find a way in which to make her ex-fiance Rodney drool. Wearing a sexy red dress, killer heels and her new attitude Sloane finds satisfaction when
Rodney falls for the bait and makes his approval clear to the point she has to actually fend him off when no does not work.

Boone Cassidy is in Nowhere for the wedding also, unbeknownst to Sloane he is one of her brothers former military comrades and also a good friend that she has heard about for years but never met.

After watching the altercation with Rodney and Sloane, as his attention had been snagged upon seeing the flaming red dress worn by the first woman that truly caught his eye in a very long time, Boone finds himself on the dance floor with Sloane in his arms. The overwhelming attraction between the two of them becomes harder to ignore as she turns up the heat and Boone soon finds himself spending the night with a woman whose name he does not even know.

After that one night when the two find out the next day who each other is Sloane pretends to be a stranger when her brother introduces them, Boone is torn but goes along. After the wedding the two go their separate ways but neither can get the other off their mind.

In Sloane’s case forgetting Boone will be near impossible for the consequences of her one night of recklessness result in a reminder that cannot ignore.

This is a story of longing for family, both characters have had to live with the shadow of either neglectful or abusive parental figures and now their inability to trust is at the core of the one of the main stumbling blocks that keep them apart for so much of this tale. Boone and Sloane both want the same thing, love and family but are not sure if they will ever find a way to making that long cherished dream come true.

As the story progresses things happen that come between the couple that even they could not predict, however fate plays strange tricks on us sometimes and when almost a year later they are reunited in Nowhere it is like they are given a second chance. A chance that may or may not work out depending on how one startling revelation for Boone causes him to either stay or run!

The Virgin's Night Out will punch you in the gut where it hurts, it will make you laugh, it will make you scream at both Boone and Sloane as they err on the side of caution over and over and in the end it will make you sigh with happiness that there is hope for a bright future to come.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

An up-and-coming MMA fighter wants more than just one night from a woman fleeing her past in Lori’s irresistible new novel.

Heavyweight fighter Denver Lewis plays real nice, but he doesn’t share. That’s why he’s been avoiding top-notch flirt Cherry Peyton. But a man can only resist those lush curves for so long. Their encounter surpasses all his fantasies, bringing out protective urges that Cherry’s about to need more than she knows…

Denver’s combination of pure muscle and unexpected tenderness has been driving Cherry wild. Yet no sooner does she get what she’s been craving than old troubles show up on her doorstep. And this time, Cherry can’t hide behind a carefree façade. Because the man by her side is one who’ll fight like hell to keep her safe…if only she’ll trust him enough to let him…

My Thoughts

We return to the world of the Ultimate series, a world that is both intense and also low key as the fighters must be aware at all times that their training makes them both a weapon as well as a target for ego driven muscle heads so keeping their cool makes all the difference in certain situations.

Denver Lewis has recently joined the SBC, the organization that has the potential to take him all the way to the top spot in the MMA if he can keep on target with his training and his anger in check when it comes to Cherry Peyton.

Cherry is in her early twenties, she is a bubbly curvy and all around gorgeous young woman who caught Denver’s attention upon their very first meeting. Too bad for him that she does not seem to be able to curb her flirtatious manner as Denver is not willing to get involved with someone who revels in the attention of multiple admirers as he wants to be the only one his woman needs on her mind.

Once again we find two people whose mixed signals have kept them apart when they could have found happiness together sooner, also the second that Cherry finds herself threatened is a major stumbling block because she prefers to work out her problems alone rather than involving Denver and his friends.

The way in which this story unfolds is one that will have it’s readers totally on Denver’s side for the most part, he is very sweet, very gentle, very caring, very protective and even when overbearing in his take charge attitude never comes across as a bully so naturally you want Cherry to listen to him.

Cherry has had a childhood that would never wish on anyone, the past experiences that she lived through were a nightmare and the situation that she finds herself in now is one that is both scary as well as very seriously dangerous if not handled correctly.

As we learn more about both Cherry and Denver it becomes very apparent that this couple has issues to work through both together and alone but the hope is that in doing so they will form a lasting strong relationship that will last. Whether that happens or not one must give them both credit for being as open to trying as well as strong enough to take a chance given their past histories.

Reading this was like being part of a reunion with all the characters, loved seeing how everyone rallied as needed and the off-the-charts heat between Cherry and Denver was scrumptious.

Looks like one by one our MMA fighters are finding that special someone as well as their careers are revving up and life is on track.

Bite Me, Your Grace

Bite Me, Your Grace - Brooklyn Ann In the style made popular by that of [a:Katie MacAlister|28550|Katie MacAlister|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1214249622p2/28550.jpg] this was a delightful blend of seriousness and humor. When one reads a historical romance that has the added allure of a paranormal twist the expectation is set for something that stands out from the crowd, this is such a story.

As others have pointed out there is nothing really new but it is the manner in which it is delivered that gives Ian and Angelicas story that easy engaging style that just keeps you turning pages laughing so hard at times you almost cry.

My favorite scenes were probably the ones where the kitten Loki appeared, having firsthand experience at how intrepid a kitten can be these scenes came across as perfectly executed and totally believable as well as smile worthy.

I look forward to more in the series.

Magic Breaks

Magic Breaks - Ilona Andrews This was the long awaited ultimate showdown that has been building up forever between Kate and her father Roland, it did not disappoint in it's intensity, had moments of nail biting sit on the edge of your seat dramatic suspense, total jaw dropping outcome and if the author had not stated this is not the last of the series the way things played out would have left one wondering.

I am a long time fan and this world, these characters and the conflicts they endure are very near and dear to my heart so really anxious to see what Kate and Curran find themselves in the middle of next. I totally enjoyed this book and am so glad the series still has a bit to wrap up!

The Wolf Within

The Wolf Within - Cynthia Eden A bit of different take on werewolf lore, an FBI agent who is pure alpha male, a lovely seemingly fragile doctor and the mysterious genius who heads the paranormal unit all combine as charismatic characters in an action packed tale that was a great intro to a series. Despite it's shortness this story has some surprises in store for the reader that will leave them wanting to delve into this world again in the books that follow.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Boy Nobody is the perennial new kid in school, the one few notice and nobody thinks much about. He shows up in a new high school, in a new town, under a new name, makes few friends and doesn't stay long. Just long enough for someone in his new friend's family to die -- of "natural causes." Mission accomplished, Boy Nobody disappears, and moves on to the next target.

When his own parents died of not-so-natural causes at the age of eleven, Boy Nobody found himself under the control of The Program, a shadowy government organization that uses brainwashed kids as counter-espionage operatives. But somewhere, deep inside Boy Nobody, is somebody: the boy he once was, the boy who wants normal things (like a real home, his parents back), a boy who wants out. And he just might want those things badly enough to sabotage The Program's next mission.

My Thoughts

Not surprisingly this was an excellent example of never judge by age or appearance, after all even angelic countenances can hide black souls.

The Unknown Assassin is the name of the series and also happens to be exactly what our 16-year-old male lead has as his best asset, he is unknown therefore he is also underestimated as well as overlooked as a threat by his targets until it is much too late.

After having been trained how to plan, set up than smoothly execute the missions he has been contracted to fulfill by the members running The Program our teen is sent on his latest hit. A hit that from the beginning sets up warning flags for a young man whose training allows for no second guessing, whose very persona depends on him not questioning his orders or it may lead to his exposure and subsequent death.

However memories from the past seems to creep out at unexpected moments, memories of a life so different than the current one that it almost feels like a sign to walk away from everything. Unfortunately once you are in The Program walking away is not an option, not if you wish to continue breathing.

Why let this sit on my review list is a mystery to me, it was exciting, action packed, an honest as well as refreshingly candid look at a teenager whose inner conflict caused him to finally see that he was not as “free” as he thought he was.

Although missed reading this sooner, the smooth and yet twisty plot lines keep one off balance but still not totally unexpected as to real target at the finale.

Cool logic states one should feel no empathy for the teen assassin, logic does not win!

Storm Watcher

Storm Watcher - Lilith Saintcrow When started this it seemed a good premise and had interesting characters.

What should have been a fast read instead turned into a study in procrastination as kept going to browse Facebook rather than finishing. Now done can say liked but did not love the story either in world building nor characters, will not read rest of series as just could not gather enthusiasm to care what happens in rest of books.

Copper King (Takhini Shifters)

Copper King (Takhini Shifters) - Vivian Arend Damon a wolf shifter and his best friend Jim a bear shifter have gotten together in Vegas with their aim to relax and have a good time. Things change when Jim meets Lillie and by the end of this short story the laughter is only outshone by the heat.

Once again have entered the world of this authors imagination and found myself entranced for the entire read.
